The state of Utah is rich in oil and natural gas and was ranked 11th in the country in crude oil production and 13th in natural gas gross production during 2016 (Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration). There are approximately 11,700 producing oil and gas wells statewide.

The program’s mission is to promote the exploration, development and conservation of oil and natural gas resources in Utah while creating energy-related jobs, boosting local economies and generating oil and gas tax revenues. The demand for reliable and affordable energy is essential for the well-being of our state.

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC (8/11/2022) -
NEW OIL AND GAS WEBSITE HAS BEEN RELEASED!
 
Our division has built a new Oil and Gas website and we are excited to officially release it to the public. The new website retains all of the functionality of the current website except for LiveData Search and includes a few new pages as well. LiveData Search will remain on this website for the time being but effective immediately we will discontinue posting announcements or updating forms, notices, etc. on this site. *NOTE* This site will continue to run until January 1st, 2023, at which point we will start disabling pages to encourage the use of our newer website. NOTICE TO WELL OPERATORS (6/3/2022) -
CANCELLATION OF TEMPORARY EXCEPTIONS TO THE GENERAL OIL AND GAS ADMINISTRATIVE RULES IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
 
Market conditions for Utah oil production, including the WTI benchmark price of U.S. oil, have stabilized, therefore the Director of the Division has determined it is no longer necessary for temporary exceptions to the general oil and gas administrative rules in response to the COVID-19. NOTICE TO WELL OPERATORS (3/8/2022) -
WORKOVER CREDIT TIMEFRAME EXTENDED, UIC WELLS COMMENT PERIOD EXTENDED, AND ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION OF PRODUCTION/DISPOSITION REPORTS REQUIRED
 
Several rule changes went into effect in February 2022. They include: (1) extentending the timeframe for submitting well workover tax credits to the division from 90 days to 180 days per Rule R649-2-23, (2) increasing the public comment period for UIC wells from 15 to 30 days per rule Rule R649-5-3, and (3) updates to Form 10 requiring all operators to submit their production and disposition reports electronically through eForm per rule Rule R649-8-11.


NOTICE TO WELL OPERATORS (12/15/2021) -
WASTE MANAGEMENT PLANS FOR 2022 ARE DUE BY JANUARY 15, 2022
 
All operators of oil and gas wells (producing, shut in, or temporarily abandoned) are required to file an Annual Waste Management Plan. Rule R649-9-2.4requires that the plan be filed each year by January 15 to account for the disposition of produced water and other E&P wastes. Failure to submit a plan by the deadline will result in a Notice of Violation. Click here to learn more.

RULES OUTLINING PENALTIES APPROVED AND ACCEPTED BY THE BOARD

At the May 26, 2021 Utah Board of Oil, Gas, and Mining hearing, rules outlining penalties for oil and gas operations were approved and accepted. Click here to learn more.


NOTICE TO WELL OPERATORS (3/3/2021) -
CHANGES TO DRILLING OPERATIONS SUSPENDED STATUS REPORTING

Operators shall file a Sundry Form 9 requesting drilling operations suspended. Prior to drilling operations resuming another sundry shall be filed notifying the intent to recommence drilling. Click here to learn more.


NOTICE TO OPERATORS (9/25/2019) -
REMINDER TO SUBMIT ALL LOGS WITH WELL COMPLETION REPORT
 
This is a reminder to operators that a copy of all electric and radioactivity logs that are run must be filed with a Well Completion Report, Form 8, within 30 days after the completion of of any well drilled or redrilled. This is in accordance with Rule R649-3-21. Failure to submit ALL logs within 30 days may result in the Division pursuing enforcement action.
